ASEM technical and vocational training symposium in Qingdao, China, in 2011The Ministry of Education, P.R.China, together with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and supported by the ASEM Education Secretariat held the "ASEM Technical and Vocational Education Symposium" in Qingdao, China, on January 11 -12, 2011.

Under the headline "How to Improve the Attractiveness and Employability of TVET in the Current Global Economic Situation”, mainly three aspects were covered:

  • How to raise the status of TVET?
  • How to balance student demand and employer needs?
  • How to engage social partners more effectively?

During the symposium, delegates actively discussed TVET development and suggested to meet regularly in order to implement a platform for ASEM members to share effective policies and best practices in TVET development.

Recommendations.

  1. To establish an expert group in order to elaborate the development of joint TVET initiatives.
  2. To share good practice between Asia and Europe on cooperation modes between multinational enterprises and local vocational schools.
  3. To encourage Asian and European member countries to conduct bilateral and multilateral TVET technical assistant programs.
  4. To support Asian and European member countries to cooperate in areas such as curriculum and teacher professional development, quality assurance, recognition of prior-learning experience and learning methods.
  5. To document best practices, particularly those reflecting industry-school partnerships which can be shared by all participating countries.

The symposium also welcomed Germany’s proactive consideration in hosting the 2nd ASEM Technical and Vocational Education and Training Symposium, and called for all members to make related preparations for the next Symposium.
